High Voltage Technician / Journeyman Lineman

Position Summary

The High Voltage Technician / Journeyman Lineman is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, and commissioning medium- and high-voltage electrical distribution systems. The successful candidate will possess strong underground cable installation and cable splicing skills while maintaining the highest safety and quality standards.

This position will require some travel, nights, weekends, and holiday work.

High Voltage Electrical Construction

  • Install medium- and high-voltage underground cable systems.
  • Install conduit, duct banks, raceways, and cable tray systems.
  • Pull, terminate, and test shielded power cables.
  • Install transformers, switchgear, breakers, disconnect switches, CTs, PTs, surge arresters, and metering equipment.
  • Install grounding systems and ground grids.
  • Install pad-mounted equipment and assist with substation construction and upgrades.

Medium Voltage Cable Splicing

  • Splice shielded power cable from 5kV through 35kV (higher voltage experience is a plus).
  • Install:
    • Heat shrink terminations
    • Cold shrink terminations
    • Taped terminations
    • Inline joints
    • Transition splices
  • Install stress cones and stress control materials.
  • Strip and prepare cable insulation without damaging conductor or shielding.
  • Properly bond and ground cable shields.
  • Repair concentric neutrals and cable jackets.
  • Follow manufacturer splice kit specifications.
  • Maintain contamination-free work environments during cable preparation.
  • Verify cable phasing before energization.

Troubleshooting & Repairs

  • Diagnose electrical distribution failures.
  • Repair damaged underground cable systems.
  • Replace failed cable sections.
  • Troubleshoot switchgear and distribution equipment.
  • Assist with emergency outage restoration.

Equipment Operation

  • Safely operate:
    • Bucket trucks
    • Digger derricks
    • Cable pulling equipment
    • Cable cutting and stripping tools
    • Hot sticks and live-line tools (if qualified)

Qualifications

Required

  • Journeyman Electrician or Journeyman Lineman (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum 3–5 years of medium/high-voltage electrical experience
  • Demonstrated experience splicing 5kV–35kV shielded cable
  • Ability to read electrical one-line diagrams, schematics, and construction drawings
  • Valid driver's license with clean driving record
  • Ability to travel as projects require
  • Strong commitment to safety

Preferred

  • CDL
  • OSHA 30 Certification
  • First Aid / CPR Certification
  • Bucket Truck Certification
  • Experience with substation construction
  • NETA Acceptance & Maintenance Testing knowledge
  • Leadership and mentoring experience

Physical Requirements

  • Lift up to 75 pounds
  • Work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Work in confined spaces
  • Climb ladders and electrical structures
  • Stand, kneel, crouch, and bend for extended periods
  • Work overtime, weekends, and emergency callouts as required

Compensation

  • Experienced High Voltage Technician / Journeyman Lineman: $35–$45 per hour
  • Highly experienced cable splicer (5kV–35kV) with CDL and advanced certifications: $45–$55+ per hour, based on qualifications and experience.
